CRC second in FEARA Regatta by Leslie Fernando Colombo Rowing Club oarsmen led by Devaka Seneviratne fared exceptionally well to become second in the overall championships at the Far Eastern Amateur Rowing Association Regatta (FEARA) held from December 16 to 19 in Calcutta. This annual regatta was conducted by Calcutta Rowing Club. The Lake Club of Calcutta emerged overall champions and they retained the title for the second year in succession. According to Chanaka Wickremasooriya the Club Captain of CRC, the eight-member CRC rowing contingent - Devaka Seneviratne, Udesh Hettiarachchi, Mevan Gunawardena, Dejan de Soyza, Sharon Kannangara, Mohamed Ali Fatharally, Isuru Perera and Shehan Wanigasekera made a big impression at the FEARA Regatta. True, the very experienced Lake Club of Calcutta won the overall title, but the young oarsmen from Sri Lanka had the satisfaction of beating more experienced Madras Boat Club, College of Military Engineering Chennai, Calcutta Rowing Club and the Bengal Rowing Club in the sculls, double sculls, pairs and fours. These eight oarsmen's performance is creditable as they are such a young team. Their fine showing is also a good warm-up who are preparing for the 2005 South Asian Games in Colombo. Training for SA Games Thirty one top oarsmen who were selected to the national pool in preparation for the South Asian Games 2005 to be held in August in Colombo, will begin training from January 8 on the Beira Waters.
