LTTE deploy cadres in full strength

by Ananth Palakidnar

The cadres of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam have been deployed in full strength towards humanitarian activities in the LTTE controlled North and East areas to overcome the Tsunami disaster according to LTTE spokesperson Daya Master.

Daya Master speaking to the Sunday Observer said that the devastation in the Mullaitivu region was severe and around fifteen Sea Tiger Cadres including a Sea Tiger Lt. Colonel had lost their lives in the disaster.

He also said that there were damages to the buildings of the Sea Tigers in the coastal areas of Mullaitivu , but most of the cadres were safe as they were attending a workshop a few miles away from the coastal areas hit by the waves.

According to Daya Master President Chandrika Bandaranaike in a letter sent to LTTE's Political wing leader S. P. Thamilselvan last week had appealed to the LTTE to join hands with the Government on the relief measures. "President's letter is currently being studied by the LTTE leader Veluppilai Prabhakaran and his response could be expected at any moment.

"We are always prepared to involve ourselves in the humanitarian activities. But the Government leaders should not interpret our commitments towards the relief measures towards manipulating their political expectations. Of course we have to do a massive operation to overcome the calamity, however we are very particular that we should not be carried away by any tactics," Daya Master said.

Daya Master has also released the LTTE's own survey on the causality figures until 31st December since the `Tsunami' waves hit the North and East coastal belt. The LTTE's assessment on the civilian causalities as follows: Ampara district: Deaths - 11,225, Missing - 5,300, Batticaloa district: Deaths -2040, Missing - 6000, Trincomalee district: Deaths - 947, Missing -2,431, Mullaitivu district: Deaths - 1622, Missing - 3,180, Vadamarachi East: Deaths - 771, Missing - 2000. The amount of people displaced 156,412. The LTTE spokesperson also said the search for the dead bodies and missing persons were still going on and the causality figures were likely to increase further.
