Long term relief from undergrads

by Samangie Wettimuny

Though now on semester end holidays (with all the assignments and exam preparations ahead), undergraduates of Peradeniya University, have got together to assist the displaced people in tsunami devastated areas.

Under the guidance of relief services committee, conducted by the Inter University Students Federation (IUSF), Peradeniya University Student's Union (PSU) organised the programme with the assistance of students, lecturers and all its workers.

As the first phase, PSU along with a large number of students in ten groups, visited devastated areas from Ampara to Kalutara last week , taking with them dry foods and much needed provisions.

They purchased most of the goods with money collected by students, who walked the streets in Peradeniya, Kandy and the areas near-by with tills in their hands, begging for donations from passers-by. Buddhist monks (undergraduates) also participated in fund-raising. The-fund raiser had enabled the PSU to make a considerable amount of donation including clothing, food items, and other essential goods.

As most of the school children, particularly those sitting for the G.C.E (A/L) this year had lost their textbooks, past papers and other relavent materials, PSU also hopes to provide them with the necessary books and notes. According to Pabodini Chandrarathna, a member of PSU, the university students are also considering volunteering to teach those students and even prepare them for the exams with classes held in small groups.

As the country is strruggling to recover from the worst ever natural disaster, such assistance of university students is praiseworthy. However their operation has not ended.

The PSU has assured that they will visit the affected areas constantly with donations and will look into the socio-economic repercussions of the issue. The university hopes to engage in relief work for a considerable time reflecting the community spirit of the students who have expended their willingness to help the displaced people as much as they can.
