Disaster Zone schools re-open before February

by Chamitha Kuruppu

Schools in tsunami stricken areas will re-open for academic activities before the end of this month.

Ministry of Education will take measures to combine students of several schools together in order to commence first term activities for year 2005.

Additional Secretary, Education Quality Development S.L. Gunawardena told the Sunday Observer that every possible measure will be taken to re-open schools in tsunami hit areas between January 20 and 30.

A large number of children are missing in these areas but for the benefit of the remaining children we have taken this decision, Gunawardena said.

The ministry has taken measures to shift welfare camps set up in schools to other appropriate locations.

There are over 200 welfare camps in schools all around the country. We look forward to shift all these camps before January 20, Gunawardena asserted.

According to Education Ministry 50 schools were completely destroyed by tidal waves and 101 were partly damaged.

The ministry has assured speedy reconstruction of the damaged schools. Meanwhile, schools in other areas will be re-opening tomorrow while 91 schools, where assessment of GCE Ordinary Level Examination are held is scheduled to re-open after January 13.
