UNDP office in Hambantota by Rohan Mathes reporting from Hambantota UN Secretary General Kofi Annan proposes to set-up a sub UNDP office in Hambantota to facilitate and coordinate resources and technical expertise to re-build Tsunami battered Sri Lanka. Kofi Annan told newsmen this at the Hambantota District Secretary's office yesterday after he and World Bank President James Wolfensohn made a inspection tour of Hambantota to assess the damage, along with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and other UN and government officials. Hambantota District Secretary and Government Agent H. Piyasena, ADB Deputy Project Director and Southern Province Rural Economic Advancement Project Director P. S. Gajanayake, the Executive Director Chamber of Commerce Hambantota Asim Thassim, Prime Minister's Secretary Lalith Weeratunga and the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse briefed the Secretary General and World Bank President and other officials on the Tsunami devastation, damage to property and loss of lives in Hambantota. P. S. Gajanayake said that Hambantota District which had a population of 525,370 and 137,159 families, has already recovered 2,454 dead bodies and recorded 616 as missing. 16,994 families had been affected. There were 2,252 IDPs in the District. The damage caused in housing and shelter, tourism, business, fisheries, roads and bridges, telecommunications, public services, health, transport, electricity, education, agriculture and others totalled approximately US $ 238 million. "We need US $ 750 million for the re-construction and re-habilitation of the Hambantota District", Gajanayake said. |
