Sarvodaya to provide shelter to children Sarvodaya went into action by opening a 24-hour Disaster Management Control Centre by distributing dry rations, milk foods, medicine, drinking water, water tanks, tents, clothes, mats and other essential items to tsunami victims in the affected areas of Southern, Northern and Eastern Provinces, inclusive of Ampara, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Kilinochchi, Mulativu and Jaffna districts. Priority has been given to restore the living conditions of the affected people. Sarvodaya in collaboration with International organisations, UN Agencies, Private sector commercial establishments, local and foreign donors are providing basic healthcare, temporary shelter, cooking utensils, food items, energy needs and other items. Immediate steps have been taken by Sarvodaya Suwasetha Sewa Society to provide immediate and long-term care and shelter to children between the age of 0-11 who have become destitute as a result of the disaster with the assistance of the Department of Probation & Child Care Services and Child Protection Authority. The Sarvodaya Disaster Management Committee comprising specialists in various fields worked out the short-term and long-term plans to rehabilitate the victims. They discussed issues like providing not only food and other facilities but addressed psycho-social issues faced by the victims to provide trauma counselling especially to children and women. In the long-term plan they worked out a comprehensive development plan and also psycho-spiritual healing programme for the survivors of the tsunami disaster. It was decided to form Committees to address the following short-and long-term issues: Trade and Micro Finance, Trauma Management, Water, Sanitation and Healthcare, Women and Children's Issues, Management of Welfare Centres. |
