by Ananda Kannangara

A record number of 10,000 children in the Kotte Municipal Council area received school books and other educational equipment to the value of Rs. 1.3 million at the "Sisu Udana- 2005" ceremony held at MC Head Quarters, Rajagiriya yesterday.

Speaking on the occasion Mayor J. M. Somadasa highlighted the importance of distributing school books to needy children and said that the objective of this program was to create an educated society.

"We have also commenced many other development programs in the area such as a dengue eradication program, road construction project, garbage disposal system, opening of two medical centres at Baddegana and Moregasmulla and also a children's park at Kotte," he said.

Kotte MC Members Jayantha Hemasiri, Siripala Cooray, Mrs. Indra Thalagala, Chandima Nayanajith and Shantha Premalal were also present. A Sinhala tabloid "Sri Jayawardana Puwath" was also launched to coincide with the occasion.
