Three phased plan to restore fisheries industry by Elmo Leonard The Fisheries Ministry has worked out a three-phased plan to revamp the industry. First is the immediate task of clearing the debris in the fisheries harbours and anchorages. Under this scheme damaged fishing craft are being repaired to make them seaworthy, while temporary shelter is being provided for the surviving fisher folk, the Department of Fisheries, Director General, G Piyasena said. The second phase is the short term plan to restore fishing gear as nets and ropes to all seaworthy craft. Also, to bring all fisheries harbours and anchorages back to operation and provide permanent shelter for the displaced fisheries community. The third phase of the program is to increase fish production according to the National Fisheries Policy laid out recently by Minister of Fisheries Chandrasena Wijesinghe. The private sector corporates involved in the fisheries sector have expressed their willingness to fund the rehabilitation of the fisheries industry and among them is Ceylon Dockyard Ltd. Adding to the donors are the Sri Lankan communities living overseas, especially, in Australia and France. In addition, the ambassadors of Japan, Australia, Canada and the USA had initial meetings with the Fisheries Minister and pledged financial assistance, Piyasena said. |
