Program to revive small and medium industries affected by tsunami by Chanuka Mannapperuma The Ministry of Small and Rural Industries has launched a comprehensive program to revive the small and medium industries devastated by the tsunami tidal waves. Under this program the Ministry plans to set up a local and international coordinating unit to assist those who were engaged in these industries. "We are expecting to obtain the assistance of foreign countries and international organisations to help those affected industries,"a ministry official said. "The entire small and medium-scale industries along the coastal belt needs to be revived," said a senior ministry official adding that tidal waves affected all the traditional and non-traditional industries. He said industries such as coir, copra, toddy tapping, wood carving, by-products related to coconut, handloom, manufacturing fishing gears, shoe industry and small-scale travel industry needs to be started afresh. Under this revival programme, the Ministry plans to obtain the support of the Chambers of Commerce and social welfare organisations for achieving the goals . The official explained that apart from the industries, most of the infrastructural facilities and channels which provided raw materials too had been affected. The Ministry also plans to set up a 'Small and rural industries information center' to collect information on the affected industries. Public could contact this unit on 2665120 and fax - 2669278. The Ministry further plans to set up a fund to rebuild those affected industries and it has already appointed a committee to provide raw materials, technology, financial assistance and training to the affected industrialists. |
