Indian PM arrives in Andamans

PORT BLAIR, India, Saturday (AFP) Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived here Saturday to take stock of relief and rehabilitation underway in the Andaman islands which bore the brunt of tsunamis that battered the country's coastline two weeks ago.

Singh, who postponed a visit to the archipelago to allow rescue relief work to proceed, told reporters he came "to reassure the people that normalcy will be completely restored in this beautiful island."

The premier itinerary includes a visit to the devastated island of Car Nicobar - which housed an Indian airbase before the tsunamis flattened it - where he will visit camps housing survivors, an official said. He will also hold discussions with officials handling relief work on the island.
