Tsunami in verse...

Walls of grief

Walls of grief
nameless dead
lives so brief
with hope once led
Cruel blows dealt
by seas so rough
on a coastal belt
where life was tough
Children let go
by parents helpless
whose choice perversely so
was to keep one less
Of the two loving ones
desperate to survive
one had to be let go
for the other to thrive
The future will bring fears
where cruelty abounds
but there will never be such tears
of parents, daughters and sons

Dr. Ruwantissa Abeyratne, Canada

Wrath of the sea God

Our hearts bleed for all those beings,
Wrecked and damaged by the giant tsunami,
Which was strong enough to fling away,
The carriages of a moving train,
Causging all those passengers to die,
In the icy cold waters of the ocean deep ...

More than twenty thousand beings vanish in a split second,
Parents, siblings, spouses all with kith and kin,
Husbands and wives with babes in arms,
Few were spared by the watery grave ...
Our hearts bleed for all across the world,
Who lost their lives in the raging sea,
What curse was it that hit us that day,
Was it the sea god's wrath upon a nation gone astray?..

If all humans led a good and wholesome life,
This world would only be an Eldorado to live in.
Was it a message given from some hidden place,
That the world's ways needed to be radically changed ?..

Let us now make amends and clear the shambles,
When phoenix like mother Lanka rises again,
From the ashes of bitter sorrow and travail,
To build a nation that is sensitive and brave,
Where there'll be compassion and genuine humility,
With fellow Sri Lankans regardless of race or creed,
To live in the harmony of an everlasting Peace.

Irene Abeysekera and Namali Fernando.

The faceless monster

Ocean swelled deadly tidal waves
Triggered trepidation and shock-waves
Tsunami- the faceless monster
Mercilessly battered coastal borders.

Picturesque Sri Lanka, my native land
Glumly looks like a squalid wasteland
Brute force of nature's fury
Unleashed unspeakable misery.

Twin evils, death and devastation
Zenith to unimaginable proportion
Scale of impact to apocalyptic
Deciphering becomes but enigmatic.

Unexpectedly on a balmy Sunday
Serenity exploded into human tragedy
Never before Asia witnessed a holocaust
Hiroshima & Nagasaki pales in contrast
Six digits figure seemingly decimated

Myriad hamlets simply obliterated
Lucky survivors escaped miraculously
Ordeals'll etched in the minds indelibly
Response from International Community
Manifests its unprecedented generosity
Early - Warning system now a necessity
Avert another awful Tsunami calamity
Asian politicians eye only next election
And never think of unborn generation
If blind, let Tsunami be an eye-opener
To perceive, life as precious and dear.

A. M. M. Muzammil, Doha, Qatar.

Waves didn't care...

Old or young,
Your waves didn't care,
Carried the Lives of,
Thousands of People
With their houses and, possessions
Though they left us,
Crying and weeping,
But, Your waves couldn't
Take the power of love and unity
Which is within our hearts.

Dhanajana Wickramathilaka, Kurunegala.

Oh! Tsunami

Tsunami made frustration
Among Sri Lankan nation
Malaysians and Indonesians
As well as Indians
No need for exaggeration
About this destruction
But the world nation
Helped in rehabilation
Also in reconstruction
These victim Asian
Without consideration
What is their nation
World leaders participation
And vigilant observation
Of Asian destruction
Was a great representation
Medical provision
Relief aid distribution
Gave an expectation
Of effective implementation
And great succession
World rich nation
By various donation
Showed humanization
And their compassion
Towards poor nation
This association
Of every nation
Is an invitation
For a better coordination
Among the politicians
To unite the nation
Through this communication
We thank all the nation
And relief organization
For their dedication
Regarding the destruction
Faced by the Asian.

Inasa Assim, Galle.

Fury of the Sea

Ayurveda, science of full and healthful life.
Using the sleeping life of root, leaf and flower
Coming to us from famed Ind's rishees of yore
Brought to these sunny' palm -fringed shores.

The stout heart of a resting German Chancellor
Resting from the labours of building anew
A renowned nation for many centuries great
To rise again over wall and stand high
The sound of fury of the sea, Herr Helmut heard
The stout heart, raised the helping hand
The generous hands will build, in Sri Lanka's Galle,

A hospital high of health and care modern
Rising close to Colombo's billion rupee Apolos
The Chancellors' gift will help and nurture
The weak in frame and lean in purse
Until "The Day After Tomorrow", dawns
When hearts move wisely to replace soon
' disaster of lost many green trees,
The Himalayas and Artics will delay
To unleash their icy, submerging waters
