Rugby star Sunil Munasinghe sports co-ordinator for Central Province

Sunil Munasinghe who is the sports co-ordinator for the Central Province attached to the Sports Ministry is a fine sportsman and a sports administrator. An old boy of Vidyartha College, Kandy, he represented Sri Lanka at the 6th Rugby Asiad held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1977 under the captaincy of Irwin Howie.

His contemporaries were Charles Wijewardene, Nimal Malagamuwa and D. Rajaguru to name a few. He also represented Kandy SC from 1970 to 1980 in the Clifford Cup Rugby Tournament and captained the club in 1977.

Munasinghe captained Vidyartha College Cricket team in 1969, he was selected as the Best Batsman of the outstation schools. From 1970-1972 he played for the Kandy Cricket Club under Malcolm Berenger in the Donoven Andree Trophy tournament.

He was a hard hitting right-hand batsman who kept wickets. He also toured Maldives with the Sports Ministry Cricket Team under Dr. Sarath Seneviratne in 1982 and in 1984. He was also a member of the Sports Ministry team which emerged as champions of the Government Services 'A' division cricket tournament.

Having joined the Central Government Ministry of Sports in 1972, he successfully completed a diploma course in sports and was promoted as District Sports Officer in 1992. From 31st Aug, 2002 to 18th Oct. 2004 he assumed duties as the Acting Director of Sports, Central Province.

He was the Co-ordinating Officer of the Triangular Sports Competition held in 1991 and the 25th National Games held in Kandy in 1995. Further he functioned as the Technical Officer cum Co-ordinating Officer at the 14th Asian Games held in Colombo in the year 2002.

As the President of the Technical Committee of the Sports Development Foundation, he helped to reconstruct 12 playgrounds situated in the AGA Division in Kandy.

As an external student, he successfully completed a degree course in physical fitness, and nutrition from Thomson Education Institute - Pennsylvania, USA in 2004.

Munasinghe still serves the Sports Ministry, Central Province Sportsmen and Sportswomen are fortunate having this versatile sportsman to lead them through their sports careers in the Central Province.
