37 killed, 22 others injured in bus crash

KATHMANDU, Saturday (AFP) At least 37 passengers were killed and 22 others injured when their bus plunged 100 metres (328 feet) into a stream in western Nepal, police said Saturday.

"A bus carrying more than 60 passengers, including a marriage party, fell down 100 metres into a stream at Tiram in Pyuthan district on Friday evening," deputy superintendent of police Mohan Raj Joshi told AFP. Joshi said a rescue operation was continuing and many bodies were expected to be retrieved from the stream. Among the dead was the bridegroom, he added.

The bus was travelling from Sonpur in Dang, in far southwestern Nepal, when it crashed in Pyuthan, some 325 kilometres (203 miles) west of Kathmandu.

Police said the bus was overloaded at the time of the accident with many passengers riding on its roof.

Joshi said 10 people were killed instantly and 27 died before getting to hospital. The fate of driver was not yet known.
