Japan prioritises aid for tsunami stricken Sri Lanka

Japan Government pledges that they would extend their assistance to Sri Lanka to reconstruct and rebuild the tsunami affected areas with necessary infrastructure in the long and medium terms. They have also agreed to set up a disaster management and prevention system in Sri Lanka.

Japan Senior Vice Foreign Minister Shunzen Tanigawa who finished a four day visit in Sri Lanka said that resulting a discussion with President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, they would send a team of experts here from Japan Disaster Management Authority to work on setting up a disaster management and prevention system in Sri Lanka.

According to the Japanese dignitary Tanigawa, Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar has also explained the need of a disaster management and prevention system of all types of future disasters.

Minister Kadirgamar has further reiterated Japan's assistance in establishing networking arrangements for dissemination of information locally and direct links to international systems.

The Japanese Minister also had discussions with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and Finance Minister Sarath Amunugama covering a number of bilateral issues including mutual cooperation on international issues.

Minister Tanigawa who is also the most senior dignitary to visit Sri Lanka inspected the southern part of the country affected by tsunami.
