First Sikh to head Indian Army by Rashomi Silva Gen. Joginder Jaswant Singh, the 22nd Chief of the Indian Army made history last week when he took over duties as the first Sikh chief in our powerful neighbour India. Hailing from a family of warriors, whose forefathers have fought in world wars, Singh however considered himself as first and last Indian and saw nothing out of ordinary in being the first Sikh to command the world's third most powerful army. "I consider myself first and last Indian," Indian media quoted Singh as saying. He was the General Officer commander-in-chief of the Western Command. Widely perceived to be a thinking General Singh was the architect of the Indian Army doctrine of Infantryman and was the first Indian Army chief with hands on experience on combating Jammu and Kashmir militancy. |
