CPC tsunami losses top Rs. 50m by Anton Nonis Destruction to filling stations, infrastructure and petroleum depots of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) in the southern coastal area due to tsunami, has interrupted smooth distribution of petroleum products in the South, according to CPC sources. CPC, in a bid to overcome the obstacles, has resorted to carry out distributions at temporarily erected installations. Investigations have revealed that seven CPC filling stations along with thousands of gallons of fuel in stock and dispensing pumps had been washed off to the sea. Buildings too were greatly damaged. The loss has been estimated at over Rs.50 million provided the reconstructions were to be carried out at the same locations. Estimated costs tend to be much higher if locations elsewhere are selected for reconstruction. However, a decision is still to be made on this matter this week. Three other filling stations owned privately too were washed off. Sources said, compensation would be available only for the private stations. It is planned to use the Chinese 'Censtar' type dispensing pumps when installing fresh filling stations. They are said to be the cheapest and the best compared to those used in the market at present. CPC is said to be the sole agent for Censtar type pumps. |
