Cultural Ministry to preserve land for tsunami monuments by Ananda Kannangara The Ministry of Cultural and National Heritage has focused its attention towards the preserving of two portions of tsunami devastated lands at Arugam Bay in the North and Peraliya in the Southern coastal belt as monuments for posterity. Minister Wijitha Herath told the 'Sunday Observer' that a Cabinet paper had already been presented in this regard after consulting with the President about the importance of preserving such monuments, especially for the well-being of future generations who could study about natural disasters of this type. "We have directed the authorities in the Urban Development Authority (UDA) to avoid clearing about two acres of tsunami devastated lands at Peraliya, while the Government Agent in the North was informed about the decision of preserving a devastated land to the extent of nearly four acres at Arugam Bay. The Minister also mentioned that a proposal of building a museum at the train affected site at Peraliya to conserve a part of the damaged train as a monument and also in memory of a large number of passengers who died in this Matara bound train also would go ahead. "But the earlier decision of retaining this ill-fated train engine in the proposed museum may have to be reversed due to the shortage of engines in the Railway Department," Herath added. |
