Rs. 600m to rebuild southern roads

by Anura Maitipe

The rural road network damaged by tsunami disaster in Galle, Matara and Hambantota will be reconstructed at a cost of Rs. 600 million within a year, Regional Infrastructure Development Minister S. B. Nawinna told the Sunday Observer.

During the discussion held at Galle District Secretariat, Divisional Secretaries and Pradasheeya Sabha Chairmen pointed out that over Rs. 300 million were spent annually for maintenance of gravel roads in these three districts.

The construction cost per kilometre of gravel roads is Rs. 6 lakhs and it costs the same to tar the roads.

Minister Nawinna has instructed authorities to construct the rural road network using tar and concrete.

Under this project 324 kilometres of rural roads will be rehabilitated in these three districts.

In addition, 20 rural sales centres that had been damaged by the tsunami disaster will be relocated 100 metres away from the restricted zone.

A special loan scheme has also been introduced by the Ministry of Regional Infrastructure to help small-scale industries such as fisheries, agriculture, farming and sweets manufacturing in these districts.
