Partly damaged hotels sanctioned for reconstruction

by Chanuka Mannapperuma

Tourism Ministry Secretary Dr. P. Ramanujam said the Government had not fully sanctioned the construction of hotels within the 100 metre buffer zone.

However, he said permission would be granted to rebuild partly damaged hotels on the same location. He explained that completely damaged hotels located within this buffer zone should seek special permission from the Sri Lanka Tourist Board before undertaking any reconstruction work.

"In the case of new hotels along the coastal belt for which agreements have been signed before the tsunami tragedy they will be considered case by case", added Dr. Ramanujam. He said the Ministry is planning to invite experts from the World Tourism Organisation shortly to assess the current situation and submit a detailed report to the Government on measures to be undertaken to resolve these issues.
