Korea pledges US$15m by Deepal Warnakulasuriya The Government of the Republic of Korea pledges more assistance for the relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction projects of tsunami affected people of the country. Korea pledged a total of US$15 million in grants for emergency relief and reconstruction assistance over the course of the coming three years. A further US$400,000 cash grant has already been finalised while US$700,000 worth material and equipment assistance was being flown in. A spokesman from the Korean Embassy said that a naval cargo carrier carrying eight units of excavators, relief materials, medicines, water, food and clothing would arrive in the country around February 13. He also said that over 400 Koreans in 18 groups engage in relief activities for the time being. The spokesman further said that the Korean Government had planned to provide several reconditioned fishing vessels at the end of April and had also pledged a soft loan scheme with the Finance Ministry to assist the government's e-Sri Lanka project. In addition, Korea would consult with the GOSL to identify and finance eligible projects for rehabilitation and reconstruction through Korea's Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF). Under the EDCF loan scheme Korea would provide US$50 million to affected countries. |
