Planned cities imperative today

by Lionel Yodhasinghe

Construction of planned cities, human settlements and residents moving from crowded cities to new ones are imperative today to save human life and property from another form of natural catastrophes in the future, said Deputy Director of Physical Planning of UDA Viranjan Kurukulasuriya.

Kurukulasuriya, an architect by profession is heavily involved in resettlement activities of the Tsunami displaced said that 20 percent of total population is today concentrated on the coastal area which is four percent of total land area in the island and this large population is intolerant to nature. Resources and infrastructure of these areas are also over used due to the heavy density of population.

Similarly, Central Region where the catchment areas are located that feeds major waterways should also be maintained properly and human settlements around these areas should be designed systematically avoiding damage to the environment and water reserves.

He said that the UDA has planned cities in the region and people from over crowded areas should move to other areas to balance this situation and Tsunami has taught a lesson that one area with unbearable population could bring vast damages to human life and property.

He said UDA has proposed planned settlements for the dry zone too in a bid to leave reservation lands and avoid haphazard construction damaging the environment.

Under the present circumstances, even a slight rain creates immediate flood as the rain water cannot be absorbed deep into the ground due to poor ecological situations. Consequently, this has decreased the underground water table disturbing the entire eco system.
