Goes to jail on contract by Jayampathy Jayasinghe The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chandra Fernando had ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to probe into a case where a Kassippu Mudalali from Ragama who was fined Rs 400,000 by courts for possessing 300 bottles of Pot Arrack this year managed to get away scot free and brew moonshine once again despite defaulting payment to courts. The matter came to light when the Central Anti Vice Striking Unit at Panadura raided his illicit hooch den at Ragama and found the hooch manufacturer directing operation there last Friday. The Anti Vice Striking Unit officers who questioned the convict had learnt that another man who masqueraded for him had gone to jail in default of the fine. The illicit hooch manufacturer was fined Rs. 400,000 by the Magistrate Courts Gampaha in Case No. 41072/51/2005 this year. A senior officer of the Anti Vice Striking Unit said the man who masqueraded for suspect would have been paid money by the suspect to go to jail. When the case was called up before the Gampaha Magistrate's Court, the masquerader would have got into the dock instead of the real suspect and said that he was unable to pay the fine. |
