ICT facilities for tsunami victims

The Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) has taken steps to provide ICT facilities for the displaced people by tsunami. According to ICTA officials they had already started the program in several camps in the Hambantota district and they will be served with their communication needs free of charge.

The new project had been drafted under the ICTA's Vishva Gnana Kendra (VGK) project and the centres which the ICTA had already launched in large camps of tsunami victims. ICTA, CEO Manju Hattotuwa said that the centre would serve as mini VGKs and those would be provided telephone, fax, internet and e-mail facilities.

The centres will also provide a TV set to broadcast special educational programs to children whose schooling has been disrupted.

Moraketiyara, Kadurupokuna, Kirinda, Kalametiya camps in Hambantota were provided with mini VGKs last week and the ICTA spokesman said that within two weeks other district' camps would also be served.

The centres were run by selected educated youth in the relevant camps after they were given a light training to work with the technology. (DPL)
