Japanese aid to de-mine by Deepal Warnakulasuriya Japanese Government pledged a sum of US$ 907,919 to speed up the "Humanitarian De-mining operations in the Vavuniya District" which was operated by Japan Centre for Conflict Prevention (JCCP). The Agreement was signed by Japanese Ambassador Akio Suda on behalf of the Japanese Government and JCCP Acting Representative Ms Tomoko Noda last Friday at the relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Ministry premises. The Japanese Ambassador at the function said that the Japanese Government had so far provided over US$ 5.1 million for mine clearance activities in Sri Lanka and it would continue in future too. He also said that the JCCP project would aim to carry out full scale humanitarian de-mining operations in the Vavuniya district assuring peace and stability and promoting rehabilitation and development in Sri Lanka. The JCCP Acting Representative said that so far they had worked in three different mine fields in Vavuniya and had cleared over 55,000 square metres of land, 31 anti-personnel mines and 10 UXOs. She also said that the second phase which they are going to start would increase the number of de-miners 30 to 50. She also added that now on they can work as two teams with the technical support from its partnership organisation, the Danish De-mining Group (DDG). The Ministry Secretary M.S. Jayasinghe, former Presidential Spokesman Harim Pieris and National Steering Committee for Mine Action Senior Advisor and Secretary Dr. A.S. Kunasingham were also present at the function. |
