UNP in turmoil

by A Special Correspondent

Turbulence within the United National Party has loomed larger over three issues, according to the party sources. Refusal of permission, to the Chief Opposition Whip and Parliamentarian Mahinda Samarasinghe, to participate in a TV talk-show, filling the vacancy created by S.B. Dissanayake in Parliament, and the Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe's recent remarks in Norway have caused considerable dissension within the leadership of the party.

According to party sources Mahinda Samarasinghe is frustrated over the refusal of permission to participate at the ITN talk-show 'Tulawa' on behalf of the party, although he had accepted the invitation. The ITN, in its news bulletin announced that Mahinda Samarasinghe would represent the UNP at the talk-show but the party leadership nominated Kabir Hassim.
