IDs for fishermen by Elmo Leonard The issue of identity cards to Sri Lankan fishermen grossly reduced in numbers by the Asian tsunami of December 26 commenced last week when a mobile service at the Galle Fisheries Harbour photographed 350 fishermen. The identity cards are expected to be handed over to the fishermen this week, director general of the Department of Fisheries G. Piyasena said. Simultaneously, five fibreglass one-day-boats and five `oru' traditional craft were gifted to fishermen at the same location by the Minister of Fisheries, Chandrasena Wijesinghe. These fibreglass boats will be fitted with engines at a later date. |
