Rock 'n thunder

Rock Saturday AWOL for a while featured at the CR & FC with an ear-splitting bang on January 29.

The night started with 2003 TNL Onstage winner Dylan Jayakody; a reputed rocker strumming his vintage seminal acoustic genius to an eager audience. The second act drew everyone's breath away. The legendary Tilak Dias (bass), Primal Liyanage (guitar) and Juse Thiyagaraja (drums) shook the cream of the place and boy did they rock the CR.

With great musical prowess the three piece performed a string of classic rock tunes that left the audience young and old in shock and awe. We were all reminded of the magical energy rock gods possessed in their hey day when it was cool to strum, trendy to howl and wild to play your hearts out.

New comers Link Reaction, took to the stage next and the band despite a few hiccups deserve credit for putting out a set of tunes that worked its way in to the aura of the CR.

2003 Onstage winners in the band category, Ezra lit the stage with their energetic display of hard rock, when the skies had apparently grown weary of Rock Company's thunderous display of talent and acted with wrath. At first it drizzled, then came a light rain and then it was calamity. The rain continued for hours and the show unfortunately had to be cancelled, not so much because of the time factor but for the musicians' safety as the P.A. system was soaked and it was deemed dangerous for any electrical equipment to be functioning.

While the night lasted, it gave the lot of us, a lot to think about and although the weather turned nastier than a cup laced with hemlock, it brought us back to that majestic atmosphere, we all missed during the last couple of months. It was wonderful to see Rock Company having added variety to their musical wheel as artists of very different genres did (or were to) perform that night.

Fans missed the sri metal and power metal sounds of Whirlwind and 2004 Onstage winners Soul Skinner respectively, the vintage bliss of Noah's Ark and the grunge gurus, Paranoid Earthling as a result of the heavy shower. It was all there, everything a music fan could crave for...the sound, the style, a mesmerising stage and a classy crowd who had great taste and knew how to have fun.
