Principals on the mat The Presidential Investigation Unit (PIU) has identified several Principals of leading schools, who have collected large sums of money to enrol children to Grade I. Two principals were interdicted and investigations are under way in seven schools. This information was revealed at a meeting of 50 principals held at the Presidential Secretariat. The Principals submitted proposals to streamline the admissions. They requested the President to relieve them from the admission process and sought an independent mechanism to oversee the admissions, to which she readily agreed. A few Heads of schools, including some from Colombo, objected to the idea of establishing a mechanism, and requested more powers in streamlining admissions. Meanwhile, hundreds of parents stormed the Principal's office of D.S. Senanayake College, Colombo, on Friday, and forcefully admitted their children to the school. Though the Principal, Asoka Senanie Hewage, informed the Education Ministry that all vacancies had been filled, the PIU was able to detect that there were 25 vacancies. |
