Controversial 'Baby 81' :

Court to hear DNA test results

by Shanika Sriyananda

The DNA results of controversial 'Baby 81' has been sent to the Kalmunai Magistrate by the Genetech - Molecular Diagnostic and School of Gene Technology Colombo on Thursday.

The Genetech Chairman Dr. Maya Gunasekara told the Sunday Observer yesterday that the DNA test took 48-hours and Kalmunai Magistrate had received the final test results on Friday.

She said that the DNA testing for paternity or maternity cases would take at least 10 to 14 days but they had given priority to this baby. According to Magistrate Court sources, the results of the DNA test will be released during this week and the final verdict of the baby 'Jayaraj Abhilash' case will be announced on April 20.

Meanwhile fulfilling a long felt need the Government Analyst Department (GAD) will apply the DNA technology for criminal investigations from next year.

The GAD is now in the process of preparing a list of necessary equipment and seeking financial allocations from the Treasury to construct a separate modern laboratory for the DNA testing, which is the most accurate method used in criminal investigations around the world.

However, the Department was clamouring for a separate laboratory for the DNA testing for the last few years and the equipment brought down to commence DNA testing are now lying in the GAD due to non-availability of a laboratory.

Due to lack of DNA facilities in the GAD, the government had to seek assistance from the private Genetech Laboratory in Colombo to resolve the dispute.

Meanwhile, the new building plan drawn to ease the congestion in the GAD and to set up the DNA laboratory is now gathering dust due to delay of the Urban Development Authority (UDA) in finalising the new town plan for the Colombo 7. " According to rules we can not commence the construction unless we get the clearance from the UDA. If we fail, we plan to set up the DNA laboratory in an existing building in the GAD premises", he added.
