Welfare projects to be launched in the North

by Rohan Mathes

Christian Affairs Minister Milroy Fernando affirms to uplift the fisheries industry and Catholic places of worship battered by the tsunami disaster in the North.

Minister Fernando who engaged in an official two day tour of the Northern Peninsula last week assessed the damage caused by the tragedy to 37 Catholic churches and the fishing community of Jaffna.

"It was mainly the fishing community of the Jaffna district fishing villages which were badly struck by the disaster and suffered most. We will be launching several welfare projects under the guidance of President Kumaratunga and the auspices of the government for those affected", he noted.

As the main purpose of his tour of the North, he also inspected the renovation work of five churches in the North and East destroyed by the ethnic conflict. President Chandrika Kumaratunga had provided Rs.48 lakhs for the reconstruction of these five churches.

Jaffna GA K. Ganesh and Jaffna Bishop the Rt. Rev. Thomas Savundranayagam had also accompanied the Minister on the tour.
