Japan to restore electricity in conflict affected areas

The Government of Japan pledged Japanese Yen 1,278 million (approximately Rs. 1,278 million) to the Government of Sri Lanka, towards the Vavuniya-Kilinochchi Transmission Line Project in keeping with its continuous efforts in providing humanitarian assistance to areas in need.

The main activities of the project will include rehabilitation of Vavuniya-Kilinochchi 132KV transmission line and the construction of a Grid Sub-Station in Kilinochchi. Prior to commencing the project activities, de-mining of the areas concerned will be carried out in co-ordination of the Ministry of Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconciliation, to enable the commencement of the transmission line and related activities.

The Yen loan that will be provided towards this project is offered on concessionary terms and administered by the Japan Bank for International Co-operation (JBIC), and executed by the Ceylon Electricity Board. The loan has to be paid in 40 years at an interest rate of 0.75% with a 10-year grace period.
