SLRC completes 23 years

by Jayamini Attanayake

On February 14 the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) will celebrate 23 years of existence. Established in 1982 with generous assistance of the government of Japan. The Rupavahini Corporation soon established itself as the leader in television broadcasting in Sri Lanka. Today it has the widest reach among the TV viewers.

Chairman Rupavahini President's Counsel M.M. Zuhair told the Sunday Observer that plans are afoot to enhance the technical infrastructure as well as the quality of programs telecast by the Corporation. "Money is not our sole objective. We are concerned about producing quality programs that can match international standards while preserving our cultural values and traditions," he emphasised. As a responsible media institution we are careful to maintain proper media ethics, he added.

He also mentioned that the SLRC through various new programs is currently engaged in promoting the knowledge of English among the youth.

Commenting on the community services undertaken by the SLRC, Chairman Zuhair commended the staff for the excellent manner it responded to the tsunami disaster not only by informing the public about what happened but also in mobilising the people to come to the assistance of the victims.
