Royal foils Wesley's bold bid by Lal Gunesekera Wesley failed by 39 runs although they had eight wickets remaining for an outright victory over Royal, who managed to retain the Sir Frank Gunesekera Memorial Shield for yet another year in their schools' cricket match at Reid Avenue yesterday. Wesley, in reply to Royal's first innings total of 201 for 6 declared, declared their innings at 179 for 8. Royal in their second turn, once again declared at 155 for 6 leaving Wesley a target of 178 runs. At close, Wesley, fared very well to make 139 for the loss of only two wickets. After Royal's skipper Dimitri Siriwardene and Milinda Maligaspe thumped half centuries the previous day, Wesley's S. Siriratne stroked a fine 81 and missed a well deserved century, and Wesley declared 22 runs behind the homesters total. The Royalists in their second turn, waited till the sixth-wicket fell to declare, leaving Wesley a target of 178 to win and the visitors batted well with A. Liyanage hitting an unbeaten 52 and Sachindra Rupasinghe an unbeaten 43. Royal 201 for 6 declared (Dimitri Siriwardene 64, Milinda Maligaspe not out 67, I. Jayaratne 3 for 60) and 155 for 6 declared (S. Nandamulla 42, Milinda Maligaspe 39, G. de Silva 28, I. Jayaratne 3 for 37, C. Karunaratne 2 for 38). Wesley 179 for 8 declared (S. Siriratne 81, A. Liyanage 27, K. Vidanagamaarachchi 3 for 40, D. Wijeratne 2 for 22) and 139 for 2 at close (Sachindra Rupasinghe not out 43, A. Fernando 32, A. Liyanage not out 52). |
