Lanka and India in courier tie-up

by Elmo Leonard

India's largest and locally known courier company DTDC Worldwide Express Ltd last week tied up with DHR Courier Express Lanka (Pvt) Ltd in a bid to meet the rising demand of trade between the two countries.

The link between the two will enable its customers to track and trace their packages anytime through the website wwe.dtdc.biz, the chairman of the Sri Lankan company, Diren Hallock told the media in Colombo when the agreement was signed.

The DTDC group is ranked among the top three in India and is the international wing of the DTDC Courier conglomerate headquartered in Bangalore, India. DTDC has offices in New York, London and associate offices in Singapore, Dubai, Bangladesh, Nepal and now in Sri Lanka, Hallock said.

Since the inception of the Indian company in 1990 it has adopted to change in line with trends and demands in the global marketplace, the Indian company's chairman, Subhasish Charkaborty said.

DTDC had deployed over 3,000 employees directly in its own offices while supporting employment for around 13,000 people through its franchises. The company had a turnover of $21 million in 2004 and a "marketshare" of $82 million, the media was told. This made it the top domestic courier company in India, Charkabothy said.

The DTDC chairman said that his company had always strived to deliver better value by having its own associate offices in strategic locations "all over the globe" as also to meet the service level expectations of a global customer.

DTDC in India handles more than 300,00 shipments per day and has a dedicated franchise network in over 3,700 locations servicing over 10,000 serviceable pincodes all over India.

Chakraborty said that his firm was happy to be associated with the DRH group in Colombo, a prominent and acknowledged company in the Sri Lanka cargo market. This partnership would add value to shipments originating from any location in Sri Lanka to any locale in India, he said.

It would also help meet the rising demands of trade between the two nations, brought about by the India-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement and increasing bilateral trade between the two neighbouring states. It is also hoped to add corporate effort and technological advancement to build this channel of business.

In addition to the vast network and the wide coverage in India, DTDC is the preferred service provider to a cross section of satisfied and demanding corporates from the retail, banking and exports sectors the media was told.
