Rs. 1.5b relief for NE by Anura Maitipe The total estimated cost for reconstruction and rehabilitation of tsunami affected areas is Rs 18 billion. Out of this Rs: 8.9 billion will be utilised for rehabilitation and re-construction work in the North and East, Deputy Finance Minister Ranjith Siyabalapitiya told the media. The government has already spent Rs 3311 million out of the Consolidated Fund to provide food relief and other basic essentials for tsunami affected families in the country. Out of this 48 percent has been utilised to provide food relief and other essentials for displaced families in the North and East Province,he added. Meanwhile Highways Ministry sources said that road network in the Eastern province which had been destroyed by tsunami had already been repaired. Electricity and water supply had been re-installed in the main towns. Ampara District Secretary Herath Abayaweera said, "Families that lived in schools and camps have already been provided with temporary shelter with basic sanitary facilities. And each family has been provided with Rs 5000 along with weekly dry rations and kitchen equipment". Technicians of the Fisheries Ministry with the help of the public repaired damaged fishing boats and the fishing community has already resumed their traditional livelihood in the eastern province," he added. Ministry of Urban Development and Water Supply has already prepared plans for relocation of towns in affected areas in Ampara district. The Ministry of Housing Development and Re-construction of Eastern Province has under taken the task of reconstruction of houses for displaced families. Lands away from the restricted zone of 200 meters have already been identified for reconstruction of houses, he said.
