Hoteliers urge authorities to clear tsunami debris by Lionel Yodhasinghe The respective Pradeshiya Sabha or the Southern Provincial Council should act promptly to clear the tsunami debris from the Unawatuna beach and clean its environment for tourism to revive, hotel operators in the area told the Sunday Observer. Tourism in the South is centred on Unawatuna for the beach is recognised as one of the world's beautiful beaches. "Without the beach, there is no survival of tourism in the area," owner of Sun and Sea beach resort, Mrs. Muharam Perera said. "We call on respective institutions including Tourist Board, Coast Conservation Department, Pradeshiya Sabha or Provincial Government to intervene in this and do the cleaning immediately as the season has started," she urged. "They said if the Government aim is to assist tsunami victims with relief to return to their normal life, this should be given priority for people to get back to their livelihood," she said. "Or else, the Pradeshiya Sabha too will lose its revenue if the operators miss the season this year, "she warned. "No government or any other party except a few NGOs showed any interest in cleaning the beaches and one small faction cannot complete it soon. Therefore the provincial government must give priority to the issue if they really want to serve their residents," she said. She also said the situation is intensifying as certain clearing parties use the beach as a garbage dump leaving behind tsunami debris they removed from other areas.
