MAS begins work by Anura Maitipe The Management Assistant Services (MAS) has been established by the Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs to make the public service more efficient with no delays, Public Administration and Reforms Minister Amarasiri Dodangoda told the Sunday Observer. Those in Clerical, Stenography, Typist, Store Keeping, Shroff and Book Keeping category have been incorporated into the Management Assistant Services with effect from December, 2004. The officials drafted into Management Assistant Service category would be provided with computer training to handle different types of multi-faceted jobs,the Minister said. Officials who served in the above-mentioned categories were given an opportunity to chose whether to join the Management Assistant Services or retire. But over 90 percent had expressed their willingness to join Management Assistant Services where they could draw a higher salary, he added. Under a circular issued by the Director General of Pensions with effect from Feb. 7, 2005. Those who wish to retire after completing 10 years service would be provided an additional five years to their service when they retire, he noted. Over 1,500 officials are now undergoing training as Management Assistants at a training centre set up in the Public Administration Ministry. The Ministry has taken initiatives to set up training centres on a district basis to expedite the on-going training program, he added.
