YMCA to embark on rebuilding work Many YMCAs were extensively damaged houses destroyed and lives lost in their respective areas on 26th December. The National Council of the YMCAs of Sri Lanka (NCY) promptly set up a 'Y' Task Committee chaired by Mr. Eraj Wijesinghe, the other partners being the YWCAs and the Y'Men International represented by Indraneela Fernando and Veraan de Mel president and Regional Director respectively. Y Task Committee mobilised local support and the International YMCAs voluntarily came forward to assist with the required resources. In addition to providing immediate relief at the sites in most of the coastal areas from Matara to Valaichchenai it also provided volunteers to assist the victims in clearing the debris in public places and residences in order to get back to their homes and begin their normal life. Medical services are being rendered through the hospitals in Akkaraipattu, Thirukovil and Komari with the assistance of the Singapore YMCA medical team. Several international partner YMCAs made a solidarity support visit last week. Messrs Bart Shaha and Yip kok Chung head of the World Alliance of YMCAs (WAY) and the Asia Pacific Alliances of YMCAs (APAY) respectively provided leadership at the meeting to the fund raising efforts.
