Airforce deserter shot dead An airforce deserter turned criminal named Chaminda was shot dead following a brawl with the police near a restaurant in Weligama area on Friday night, police said. The incident occurred around 10.30 p.m. when several motorists had complained to Kananke Police Post that some drunken people were creating a commotion near a liquor bar. Meanwhile two policemen from Kananke Police post were rushed to the scene to quell the disturbance. A crowd of about 25 persons including service deserters armed with swords and poles became restive when the policemen ordered them to disperse. They set upon the policemen and removed their caps as if to humiliate them.
