French marathon tour to assist tsunami victims A French marathon tour organised by Walkers Tours and SDPO France (Organisation of Sports Development and Performance) under the theme "Rebuilding Sri Lanka" to assist those affected by the Boxing Day tsunami is scheduled to be held from February 21 to March 2. Over 60 marathon runners will cover about 15 to 21 km per day on average spanning Habarana, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Negombo. The four main projects through this marathon is a donation of Sterling Pounds 7,000 (about Rs. 900,000) to construct two houses in Hambantota. Five delegates from Eurocopter will visit North, East and South tomorrow (Monday) to donate Sterling Pounds 20,000 to assist the victims to rebuild their lives and also schools that requires assistance. A sum of Sterling Pounds 350,000 to 500,000 from SDPO and Eurocopter will be utilised to rebuild houses in devastated areas with a donation of a consignment of items (300 kg) for the use of infants and children who survived the catastrophe. In addition, a French film crew sponsored by the Ceylon Tourist Board in France, will arrive here with the marathon runners to cover the programme and provide regular updates on local Sirasa TV channel. The President of SDPO, France and Les Foulees du Sri Lanka, Jean Claude Le Comec, one of the main organisers of the France-Gakar Rally in the past years, was instrumental in organising this relief campaign. He is a keen lover of Sri Lanka and always ready to render his utmost co-operation and support at this hour of need. (L.G.) |
