Netball Academy - a boost for game

by Leslie Fernando

A big boost for netballers is the promise of Austasia Sports Complex Thalawathugoda together with Mrs. Hyacinth Wijesinghe who will be operating the first-ever Netball Academy in Sri Lanka on April 5.

Mrs. Hyacinth Wijesinghe, former Sri Lanka netball captain, national coach and one-time national netball coach of Singapore, at a press conference held on Friday evening to launch the programme said that the objective of this academy is to promote and develop netballers and in turn to hand over top and promising players to the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka.

Anyone interested in netball could join the academy, even the freshers can enrol. This academy will be similar to Singapore Netball Academy which is very popular added Hyacinth.

It will be a one-year programme and the age categories ranging upto 8 year to 13, 16 and under 19 and under and under 21. The academy is limited to 70 players (8 year to 16 will be 40 players and 19 years to 21 will be 30 players). The duration of training 2 hours per day and 4 lessons per month.

Hyacinth will be the head coach and four former Sri Lanka players Sandaya Jayasuriya, Priyanka Peiris, Somitha Kumari and Jayanthi Somasekeran de Silva will assist Hyacinth.

The academy will be of great benefit to the country as more netball players will emerge. The acedemy is only for the development and no players in the academy will be involved in any outside tournaments, but only competition amongst the academy players like inter-house tournaments. The academy players will also have the opportunity of playing against academy teams of Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Hong Kong on a reciprocal basis.

Players attending the academy will also stand to gain knowledge on mental skills training, physical education, strength and conditioning, nutrition programme. The academy will provide good leadership to the players and good habits to become top citizens.

Enrolment is on and those who are interested in joining the academy should contact the organisers early as numbers have to be limited.
