Terminals to popularize online lotteries

Online National Lotteries (Pvt) Ltd (ONL), which is owned by the National Lotteries Board (NLB) has set up a network of Terminals throughout the country to popularise "Online lotteries" in Sri Lanka.

At present, ONL has around 100 agents throughout the country since its launch on December 1, 2004.

The Online lotteries are sold through its agents in populated cities islandwide, its Chief Operating Officer (COO) Bjorn Helge Hoffmann said.

He said that "the product of on-line lottery named Rapido will provide a novel experience for Sri Lankans, which is a little different to other passive lottery tickets in the country".

The basic difference being that this lottery, which is technologically advanced keeps abreast with the latest developments worldwide and is safe for the player. For the lottery buyer it's almost the same as the normal lottery sold on the street, he said.

This lottery is computer generated. According to Hoffman, their main objective is to provide people with responsible products and entertainment within social acceptable conditions and at the same time ensure a secure and long term profit for the beneficiary causes in the country.

Marketing and Sales Manager Manoji Samararatne said that they are in the process of setting up around two hundred online terminals in the main cities in the country.

The profits of the company will be channelled to a beneficiary cause- "Parliamentary Scholarship Fund", to be used for further education of the youth, which in turn would help Sri Lanka to build a better tomorrow, Ms. Samararatne said.

This lottery is for the public and ONL is planning to introduce more new lottery tickets in the future.

ONL is currently managed by Norsk Tipping, a Norwegian government owned lottery organisation and the Chairman is currently the President of the World Lotteries' Association.
