SLI settles Rs. 137m motor claims

In the aftermath of the tsunami disaster, Sri Lanka Insurance (SLI) was the first company to send assessment teams of qualified motor engineers equipped with sophisticated communication facilities to cover affected areas from Dehiwela to Yala and building information data bases of damaged vehicles, a spokesman for SLI said. The company also set up a 24-hour disaster recovery unit on the same day to assist SLI customers who were affected by the disaster.

He said at a time when there was much debate on the liability of the industry, as vehicles were not covered for this disaster Sri Lanka Insurance took the decisive step to meet all claims, treating them as normal claims.

To-date the company has already settled 99% of the 1,660 claims submitted by policy-holders amounting to Rs. 137,145,000. "We paid all our customers on an ex gratia basis, not as claims, and over 65% of claims were settled 100%, said Consultant Motor, Suren Galagoda.

The unsettled claims consisted of vehicles that were reported missing, fraudulent claims and claims that were pending due to incomplete documentation, he said.
