I.C.D.S. Youth Exchange Programme : Doing the impossible Youth exchange programmes aren't common in Sri Lanka, and sending young people overseas unchaperoned is rarer still. That however is exactly what five interactors of the D.S. Senanayake College got the chance to do when they visited Malaysia on a five day trip this month. The Interact Club of D.S.S.C together with the Rotary Club of Greentown, Malaysia initiated this unique programme in a bid to advance international understanding and goodwill. The five-member delegation, all senior members of the club and ranging from 15 to 17 years of age were putting to action their club theme for the year, 'Nothing is Impossible.' Arriving at KLIA, they were in for a bad start when they discovered their luggage missing. However they were to learn the true meaning of hospitality when the Rotarians took them out for excellent coffee and bought them clothing and other essentials. They were each assigned to a host family who took great care of them and served sumptuous meals. As Nadeesha put it, 'I'd rather reckon my host family as my own. They undoubtedly touched our inner selves.' After three nights of sightseeing and engaging in community service projects at Ipoh where they even made a contribution towards an orphanage, they spent the entire fourth day by themselves at Kuala Lampur before returning home the next day. They hope to continue this project on a yearly basis as it broadens their horizons and makes them take responsibility. Says Huzaifa, the club President, "the exposure gained was remarkable. I feel up to any challenge now." - RH |
