CNO data was privy to public - Dr. Tara de Mel Former chief of the Centre for National Operations, (CNO) Dr. Tara de Mel, said that a report published in a English daily yesterday on CNO was misleading and incorrect. She told the Sunday Observer that the information collected was for public information and not secret. The data collected by the CNO on the dead, missing, injured etc had been published and was made available regularly on the CNO web site until February 4, when the Centre handed over its responsibilities to the relevant ministries and government agencies. She added, the CNO web site was on display for two weeks after the centre ceased its operations in order to facilitate access to data by concerned persons. Information related to foreign donors was handled by the Foreign Ministry, even during the period of the centre's operation, through its designated desk. Donations related to other ministries were similarly handled. "The clearing of goods collected at the airport and sea port was handled by relevant authorities and with the coordination of the Commissioner General of Essential Services. The temporary shelter issues were handed over to CGES," said Dr. de Mel. She pointed out that the mandate of the CNO was not to directly collect data from other government institutions, but to collate and analyse them. The CNO was mandated only to coordinate and facilitate relief work in the first four weeks after the Tsunami, Dr. Mel further said. (MPM) |
