Iran quake: President condoles, extends support The worst earthquake with 6.4 magnitudes that struck Iran on Tuesday since the deadliest December 2003 quake which killed over 30,000 in the ancient city of Bam has destroyed about 8000 homes displacing thousands in Dahuyeh, Houtkan and Zarand, according to agency reports. Having heard the calamity, President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga was one of the first Heads of State to send a condolence message to President Mohammed Khatami and shared the grief of families who lost their beloved. President Kumaratunga in her message stated: "I was deeply saddened to learn of the earthquake which struck the Kerman Province this morning and that it has caused the deaths of hundreds of your people. "Personally and on behalf of the people of Sri Lanka, I extend to Your Excellency my most sincere condolences. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this sad hour. "We share your grief and stand ready to extend our support in your quest to restore normalcy in the affected province. "I am confident that the courage and the strength of your people will help you face this tragedy. Let me also reaffirm the strong bonds of friendship and warm relations that bind our two nations. Please accept, Your Excellency, my highest consideration and personal esteem." |
