Rs. 1b for reconstruction of fisheries by Anura Maitipe The government has channelled Rs 1 billion for rehabilitation and reconstruction of fisheries industry, a spokesman for Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources told the Sunday Observer. These funds had been granted from foreign countries to alleviate the fishing community in tsunami affected areas. The funds will be utilised for reconstruction of fisheries harbours,ice factories,fishing boats and houses for displaced families in the affected areas following tsunami disaster, he said. The reconstruction of fishing harbours had already been undertaken by China,Japan and Belgium. The Chinese government has undertaken reconstruction of 7 fisheries harbours in Galle, Hikkaduwa, Devinuwara, Kudawella, Negombo, Panadura and Beruwala, he added. While the Japanese government has engaged in reconstruction of two fisheries harbours in Tangalle and Kirinda. The reconstruction of Mirissa fisheries harbour had taken by Belgium government,he said. Under this program 11 fisheries harbours, 25 anchor bases and 31500 houses destroyed by tsunami from Point-Pedro to Dondra are to be re-built. Apart from this all unrepairable fishing craft will be replaced with the latest fishing equipment, he added. |
