Jobs for 42,000 graduates by May 20 by Ananda Kannangara The program of granting permanent jobs to 42,000 unemployed graduates in the public sector under the Government's Graduates Employment Program (GEP) will be finalised by May 20 this year, Deputy Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya told the Sunday Observer yesterday. He said that all these selected graduates would be given permanent appointments in Government Departments, Ministries and various other public institutions along with their appointment letters on or before the deadline. It is said that only 90 per cent graduates, from the registered 42,000 had so far given their consent to accept appointments due to various personal reasons. About 60 per cent of them are females. The Minister also confirmed that 20,000 graduates will be recruited as teachers in public schools countrywide including in the North and East. "In addition to this, a large number of graduates will also be recruited to the Finance Ministry, while a sufficient number of persons will be absorbed to the Departments of Health, Agriculture and Buddhasasana," he said. Minister Siyambalapitiya further said that 15 per cent of teachers pledged their consent to seek appointments in schools located in the North and East. "All newly appointed graduates will receive the additional Rs. 2500, in addition to their present salary of Rs. 6000 and also benefits from the Agrahara Medical scheme," he added. |
