Competition within media gives space for expression - PM

by Rohan Mathes

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse observes that a balanced media is a social responsibility of the private and public broadcasting sector of the country, amidst stiff competition.

The premier said, "the scope for expression of diverse viewpoints and perspectives of varying interest groups on one side and the communication of a variety and diversity of political, social and cultural messages to the people on the other are partly a function of the social responsibility of the private as well as public media, but largely an outcome of the competition within the broadcasting sector in the country.

Competition within the broadcasting sector, both private and public, results in the viewpoints and styles of different types of artistes and journalists finding space for expression in the media."

He said this in his key note address on "Present and future of public and private broadcasting in Sri Lanka", at the opening of the South/South East Asia Sub Regional Broadcasting Workers Workshop last Thursday at the Taj, where delegates from the South and South East Asia attended to focus issues confronted by the electronic media in the region.

Mahinda Rajapakse pointed out that profit orientation was a main objective of private broadcasting companies, and in doing so, the management has the task of skilfully handling the inter-play of five critical elements, profits, entertainment, knowledge, provision of Artistes/Journalists viewpoints and the provision of opportunities for the public to express their varied viewpoints.

It needs skilled managers capable of managing the interplay of these five elements, and yet remain profitable and viable over time.

There would be greater scope for interest groups to express their positions and viewpoints in the media, when the commercial competition among the different private companies are intense.

"Lets hope the broadcasting sector will become more and more competitive. The development of low cost broadcasting technologies will help us move rapidly towards this objective", the Premier added.
