Govt. to buy 2m tons of Maha paddy by Anura Maitipe The government has made arrangements to purchase 2 million metric tons of paddy that would reach the market with the collection of the Maha paddy harvest, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation Media Secretary Prasana Adikari told the Sunday Observer. The set target of 1.8 million metric tonnes of Maha paddy yield had been surpassed this season. The highest yield has been recorded from Mahaweli areas. Meanwhile, the Government has offered Rs. 16.50 per kilo for Samba and Kekulu paddy and Rs. 15.50 for Nadu and set up 1300 buying centres in Ampara, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kurunegala and Hambantota districts. He added that while providing a reasonable price for the rice producer, paddy purchased by the Government would be used as a buffer stock to prevent increase of rice prices in the market for the benefit of the consumer. The private sector had made arrangements to purchase paddy through farmer companies and they have offered competitive prices of Rs 18.50 per kilo for Kekulu, Rs. 17.50 for Sumba and Rs. 16.50 for Nadu. The Chairman, Paddy Mill Owners' Association in Kalmunai Ameer Ali said with the flow of new stocks of rice the prevailing price of rice in the market would slightly go down within the next few weeks but it would not make a negative effect on the purchasing price of paddy. |
